How coaching helps navigate through transitions

Transitioning through personal and professional phases can be a challenging feat, often leaving us feeling lost or overwhelmed. However, with the help of coaching, navigating these transitions can become a smoother journey. Coaching offers a valuable support system that helps you gain clarity, set goals, and overcome obstacles during times of change. Whether you’re transitioning careers, starting a new venture, or going through a personal transformation, coaching provides guidance and accountability. It is a process that empowers you to explore your authentic self, discover new possibilities, and build the confidence needed to navigate through transitions successfully.

case study 1

Sebastien It's time to find my own path

I feel like I’ve been living someone else’s life for too long. It’s time to find my own path.

Sebastien is a 34-year-old man who grew up in a traditional family where success was measured by academic and professional achievements. He followed his parents’ expectations and pursued a career in finance, but he always felt unfulfilled and disconnected from his true passions.

Sebastien is a hard-working and ambitious individual, but he often doubts his abilities and lacks confidence in his decisions.

After a few years of working in the corporate world, he realized that he needed to make a change and find his own path. However, he struggled with the guilt and fear of disappointing his parents, who had invested so much in his education and career.

He decided to seek the help of a coach to guide him through this process of self-discovery and personal growth.

coaching focus areas and objectives

Sebastien has decided to concentrate on two challenging situations that he initially framed in the following manner:

1) finding a solution to the difficult situation with his coworker, and

2) achieving a sense of clarity and self-assurance in his personal and career decisions.

Sebastien has made the conscious decision to address these specific challenges head-on, recognizing their significance in both his professional and personal life.

personal and professional transition

Sebastien got on the path of discovering his core values and breaking free from the ones strongly imposed by his parents.

During this journey, he got an insight into the several limiting beliefs that were preventing him from achieving a sense of fulfillment and happiness: the fear of disappointing or being judged by the people around him, the belief that communicating his feelings and needs is a weakness, and the idea that he can only be successful in the traditional career path that has been chosen for him.

Step by step, working on overcoming these limitations, he became more open to seeing the various opportunities.

He built the foundation by discovering his core values, increasing his confidence, and becoming more autonomous on the journey to find his life path.

Lynda is a 36-year-old dentist. She owns her dental practice with a loyal and consistent list of patients. She has achieved what she dreamed of in her job but has felt stuck and unfulfilled for some time.

Lynda is introverted and tends to overthink things, which can sometimes hold her back. Lynda has been divorced since two years ago, with two young kids, and often feels overwhelmed.

She is unhappy with her current boyfriend, feeling he is not her type, and is unsure of his motivation.

Lynda has tried various self-help techniques, but nothing seems to be working. Lynda has heard about the benefits of coaching from her friends and patients and is now looking for a coach who can help her improve her personal life and advise her on the way forward professional-wise.

3) getting support in making decisions about her life and clarifying her choices.

personal and professional transition

Marc I want to take the next step

I have been stuck in my career for a while now, and I want to take the next step. I am willing to put in the work to achieve my goals.

Mark is a 50-year-old man who works for a big enterprise as a Senior Manager. He is in his second marriage and has four kids. Mark feels stuck in his career and unsure how to develop the situation further.

Mark is concerned about financial stability despite having a stable job and income. With overall economic changes and kids growing, he noticed the expenses have been increasing, and thus, he would like to ensure the quality of life he used to have and have more independence at work.

Mark likes intellectual challenges at work and has a good sense of humor. Mark has always been hesitant about coaching and is skeptical about its effectiveness.

Recently, he read an article in Harvard Business Review devoted to the coaching industry of the future, its trends, and research on the effectiveness of the coaching practice. Since then, Mark has been wondering if this is something that can help him navigate through transitions in his life.

coaching focus areas and objectives

Initially skeptical about coaching, Mark changed his mindset, fostering a more open and positive attitude towards the process, and started working on the following objective:

gain a clear understanding of the organization and the role he aspires to pursue as his next professional endeavor, where he can do what he does best, and engage in projects that truly resonate with his core values, passion and interests.

personal and professional transition

After feeling extremely overwhelmed and completely drained, Mark gained a newfound sense of clarity. He clearly defined his expectations for the type of organization he desired to work for, as well as the working environment he sought.

Having insight into his strengths allowed Mark to make conscious decisions about the roles that would stimulate his development and bring him satisfaction and joy in his professional life.

Enhancing his leadership skills ensured he was well-prepared for the professional roles he envisioned.

Throughout the coaching journey, Mark accepted the fact of having his own needs and the importance of satisfying them. He realized the limitation of his belief in the necessity to choose between the family’s needs and his wishes. Mark found pleasure in the hobbies he had forgotten.

Moreover, stress reduction techniques and mindfulness practices helped him navigate challenges with resilience and maintain a positive outlook, particularly in the face of uncertainties or changes in the economic landscape.

Celine I want to find my place in the new country

I want to find my place in the new country, but I feel lost. It is our first expatriate experience. I need guidance and support to make the right decisions.

Celine is a 40-year-old housewife who recently relocated to a new country due to her husband’s three-year business assignment. Her husband holds a senior management position in a large multinational enterprise, entitling the family to various expatriate benefits.

Celine has been on maternity leave for the past four years. Before her break, she held the position of a highly accomplished Marketing Manager at a reputable and award-winning marketing agency in the city.

The family’s relocation facilitated the enrolment of their children into kindergarten and school, and Celine started to have more time for herself. She misses her friends but tries to adjust to the new lifestyle, customs, and routines. Celine has a basic command of the local language as she took the language course prior to her arrival.

While having more time for herself, Celine is contemplating various options, including getting back to work, establishing her own business, or prioritizing her family responsibilities – taking care of her children and supporting her husband – while also developing her personal hobbies.

coaching focus areas and objectives

Amid the significant life transition, Celine identified two objectives to help her navigate this change, explore the options, and find a fulfilling path in the new environment:

 1) clarify career aspirations, aligned with her strengths, values, and skills, and make a decision that will help to balance family responsibilities, personal interests, and potential work commitments, and

2) adapt to a new culture so to feel more at home in this new country.

personal and professional transition

Celine has developed a more optimistic and empowered mindset as she navigated her career, personal life, and cultural adaptation in the new country.

Following a thorough assessment of her values, interests, and skills, Celine expressed an interest in entrepreneurship. She brainstormed and refined business ideas and explored their feasibility and market potential.

Celine openly discussed her personal and professional aspirations with her husband. This enhanced her confidence and belief in the ability to create a thriving business that leveraged her skills and experiences and brought joy and a sense of accomplishment.

Celine was keen to develop positive and supportive social connections in the new country. She participated in a series of workshops designed for aspiring young entrepreneurs.

She created a network of like-minded individuals who faced similar interests and encountered similar obstacles when starting their businesses. This was an excellent experience for building positive relationships that fostered a sense of belonging.
